‘Alienoid’ Review: Sorcerers, Alien Prisoners and Much, Much More – The New York Times

This bonkers Korean film couldn’t choose only one cinematic style, so it went for half a dozen of them without delay.

This Korean movie begins within the 14th century with an alien creature making an attempt to flee from the human physique inside which it has been imprisoned. Fortunately, a gap within the sky opens and an SUV materializes, carrying the interstellar lawman Guard (Kim Woo-bin) and his robotic sidekick.

And that’s simply the primary 5 minutes: The remainder of Choi Dong-hoon’s film then escalates into much more bananas territory.

Hopscotching between the current day and 1391, “Alienoid” one way or the other works a crystal thingumajig referred to as the Divine Blade into its narrative, in addition to automobile chases, aerial wire-aided fights, medieval gunslinging, time journey, magic battles and Transformers-like mayhem, with dashes of comedy and romance for good measure. That is the uncommon movie that makes going off the plot rails wildly entertaining, even when each half-hour or so Choi drops an data dump to make clear (type of) the story. Principally, he stitches collectively scenes which can be nearly self-contained and powered by such memorable characters because the bounty-hunting rapscallion Muruk (Ryu Jun-yeol), Mr. Blue (Jo Woo-jin) and Madam Black (Yum Jung-ah), who go by the Sorcerers of Twin Peaks, and the badass Ean (Kim Tae-ri, in fairly a swap from her flip in Park Chan-wook’s gothic thriller “The Handmaiden”)

The film is bursting on the seams, as if Choi, in his first outing for the reason that 2015 historic motion drama “Assassination,” was drunk on pure filmmaking pleasure and threw each cinematic style into a big blender.

And there may be extra to return: as overstuffed as it’s, “Alienoid” is just the primary installment of a two-movie epic.
