Empire of Light review: “Sam Mendes’ elegant homage to the movies”

Each a love letter to cinema and the enterprise of cinema itself, Sam Mendes’ newest operates on a far quieter register than his thunderous warfare epic 1917 and his two Bond movies, Skyfall and Spectre. Certainly, have been its plot not so contingent on the workings of a rundown image palace on the southeast coast of England and the decaying seaside city round it, Empire of Mild may virtually go well with the stage.

There’s actually the texture of a theatrical ensemble to the ragtag crew of staff who hold the Empire cinema afloat. From pompous boss Colin Firth to Toby Jones’ persnickety projectionist and the assorted staff who gather ticket stubs and sweep up popcorn, its employees have the characterful whiff of Shakespeare’s so-called impolite mechanicals.
