Homebound review – country trip goes very wrong, as does the film it’s in | Film

Just like in lots of horror movies which have come earlier than, a visit to the countryside goes terribly awry in Sebastian Godwin’s function debut. Taken to an imposing mansion on remoted land, Holly (Aisling Loftus) is nervous about assembly the mom and the youngsters of her new husband Richard (Tom Goodman-Hill). To make issues worse, on their arrival Richard’s estranged ex-wife is nowhere to be discovered on the sprawling property. In the meantime, the youngsters start to behave surprisingly: locked doorways and the eerie rustling of bushes trace at a daunting secret to which solely the youngsters have the important thing.

There may be nothing flawed with reviving well-worn style tropes, and Homebound’s setting does vaguely recall the pleasures of spooky British TV classics corresponding to The Owl Service. Nonetheless, because the plot is pretty easy, the shortage of visible fashion and a spotlight, and consequent failure to craft a suspenseful environment, is particularly evident. The soundscape can be a disappointment, oscillating between repetitive noise-making and screeching string music. The hassle to evoke psychological unease entails merely having the youngsters doing bizarre issues, like burying a doll within the depth of the woods, and capturing them with such pedestrian nondescriptness that the characters may as nicely be consuming a glass of water.

Unsupported by the script, Goodman-Hill delivers the occasional flash of a superb efficiency, because the movie progressively evolves right into a portrait of household trauma. Nonetheless, this isn’t sufficient to save lots of Homebound: working a bit of bit over an hour, it looks like an underdeveloped quick that has overstayed its welcome.

Homebound is launched on 1 April in cinemas.
