Makeup review – secret life of a drag-artist banker underpins tender friendship tale – The Guardian
This low-key, low-budget portrait of an odd-couple friendship takes some time to get going, and by no means absolutely hits its stride – although it has its moments. Director Hugo André performs chef turned meals blogger Sacha, a fastidious Frenchman dwelling in London who rents a room in a home. His new landlord and flatmate is metropolis banker Dan (Will Masheter), who appears to fit neatly into the stereotype of macho finance bro. However Dan seems to have a secret life, dressing up in glittery glam frocks and feather boas, remodeling into alter ego Danielle.
A friendship of types develops between the 2 males, throwing up a few good scenes. When Dan cooks soup, choosy gourmand Sacha appears appalled in the best way that solely a Frenchman can on the claggy dollop of peanut butter slopped into his bowl. There’s an actual sweetness, too, in Masheter’s efficiency as Dan begins to dwell extra brazenly, tiptoeing into the world of cabaret – and, if nothing else, watching his self-expression blossom is a reminder of how sinister the anti-drag legal guidelines are which are presently sweeping the US.
Elsewhere, a number of the appearing feels a bit broad and the movie has some clumsy moments. The film offers unconvincingly with a disciplinary process at Dan’s banking agency, the place his line supervisor takes motion that I’m sure no metropolis boss would dare to, fearing an costly lawsuit or dangerous publicity. Like quite a bit right here, it feels distractingly a bit off and never fairly actual – or possibly simply not thought by way of correctly.
