The Innocent review – enjoyably French romcom heist caper – The Guardian

With his fourth characteristic directing, mop-haired actor-director Louis Garrel places a French stamp on the Hollywood heist film. The Harmless is a screwball romcom-caper starring Garrel himself as a man who will get caught up in a plot to pilfer a job lot of caviar (you don’t get extra Gallic than that). It’s a broad, fulfilling, lighthearted film with a good few not-insignificant plot holes, however a genuinely stunning storyline that retains you guessing to the tip.

Garrel performs Abel, a younger widower, simply 32, who’s been emotionally dormant since his spouse died. Although he’s is near his mum, Sylvie, a charismatic, heat chaotic actor performed with fizzing comedian power by Anouk Grinberg. Sylvie has a factor for dangerous guys; her newest squeeze is suave thief Michel (Roschdy Zem). They met in jail when she was instructing an performing workshop and he was banged up for a five-stretch. Head over heels, they get married and after Michel is launched, open a florist collectively.

However Abel suspects that his mum’s new husband is just not fairly as dedicated to the straight and slim as he claims. When he finds a gun in Michel’s pocket, he turns personal eye. Abel’s greatest good friend Clémence (Noémie Merlant) is appalled by his nosing about. The pair’s will-they-won’t-they-get-together is essentially the most predictable facet of the film. Elsewhere, the plot takes some pleasingly barmy turns, as Abel is dragged right into a legal enterprise, ending with a madly over-the-top set piece. It’s intensely French, although you possibly can think about it getting an English language remake; although I’d guess a packet of Gauloises the Hollywood model will change the ending.
