Aquaman star Jason Momoa has reteamed up with producer Peter Safran to supply a biopic about legendary Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku who’s broadly credited with popularizing browsing as a sport.

Based on Selection, Momoa and Safran have teamed with producers Susan Miller Carlson and Eric Carlson of Carlson Firm to deliver Kahanamoku’s story to the display. Chris Kekaniokalani Brilliant is at work on the script. Kahanamoku was the topic of the American Masters documentary Waterman — Duke: Ambassador of Aloha that debuted on PBS in Might and was narrated by Momoa, a fellow Hawaiian.
Kahanamoku was a five-time Olympic medalist who broke data as a champion swimmer. Teh athlete busted via racial stereotypes as a local Hawaiian competing throughout 4 Olympic Video games in 1912, 1920, 1924 and 1932. After retiring, the athlete opened fuel stations round Hawaii and ultimately turned sheriff of Honolulu for thirty years. He died in January 1968 at age 77 after a coronary heart assault.
Based on the report, trademark rights to Kahanamoku’s identify have been the topic of long-running authorized disputes with members of his prolonged household and numerous enterprise ventures. Momoa, Safran and the Carlsons are working with Don Love, the California investor who runs the Malama Pono Ltd. enterprise that has managed IP rights to Kahanamoku’s legacy since 1999.
“Duke’s story is one which has fascinated me for years,” Safran informed Selection. “To now have the chance to inform it with the respect that it deserves, in collaboration with Jason, Chris and the Carlsons, is actually a present.” Eric Carlson added, “We’re all proud to be working with Malama Pono to inform the unbelievable true story of Duke Kahanamoku, considered one of America’s most neglected heroes.”
The untitled movie will “discover this iconic and mild man because the legendary swimmer, trailblazer and the undisputed father of modern-day browsing,” based on producers. “Duke lived a lifetime of compassion and inclusion as he embraced the true that means of ‘Aloha.’”
