Polite Society review – fun action comedy mashes Jane Austen and the Chuckle Brothers – The Guardian

Nida Manzoor created We Are Woman Elements for Channel 4, a sitcom about an all-female, all-Muslim punk band; now, for her debut function movie, she brings severe ranges of goof, wack and zane for a feelgood motion comedy with a really incorrect adjective within the title. It stars newcomer Priya Kansara as a younger lady from a British-Pakistani household: Ria, a yr 11 martial arts fanatic and wannabe stuntwoman on a determined mission to sabotage her older sister’s marriage to a man that someway solely she will see is a sinister creep.

Kansara does plenty of her personal gonzo stunts and kickboxing strikes, and the sheer power and full tilt comedy she brings to them had me considering of the younger Jackie Chan in Drunken Grasp. Manzoor’s movie additionally has bits of Jane Austen, Kevin Kwan and Gurinder Chadha, with a cheeky homage to the Chuckle Brothers within the sequence through which two individuals should carry a heavy field down the steps.

Kansara’s Ria obsessively practises her struggle strikes, recording them for her YouTube channel and yearns to be a stunt artist, to the dismay of academics at her posh college. However she is poignantly upset, in ways in which she will’t fairly describe, by the unhappiness of her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya), who seems to have given up on her personal dream of being an artist and is sinking into despair. However then their mum and pop – nice performances from Shobu Kapoor and Jeff Mirza – are completely thrilled at a sudden marital miracle on the horizon. A particularly eligible, rich younger man, Salim (Akshay Khanna), a health care provider who does a great deal of caring medical analysis, is fascinated about courting Lena. Ria can see that there’s something a bit off about this man, and she or he doesn’t take care of Lena’s future overbearing mother-in-law, performed by Nimra Bucha.

Well mannered Society is a pointed satire of the wedding market, a world through which secondary training is obtainable to younger girls on the understanding that they have to give up to demure wifehood a couple of years later than regular. And its macabre plot twists present how this similar marriage market infantilises younger males, revealing an terrible fact to brides as to who precisely is a very powerful lady within the groom’s life. Manzoor’s struggle scenes, so amusingly executed by Kansara, successfully dramatise the horrible battle that girls are going to endure – particularly the continued duel with that sure particular in-law. This movie delivers a spinning again kick of snickers.
