Sunlight review – assisted-dying buddy movie adds Viking gods to the mix – The Guardian
This film from screenwriter Ailbhe Keogan and director Claire Dix is nicely intentioned – nevertheless it’s broad, and for me it does probably not do justice to the seriousness of its euthanasia theme. There’s an odd, strained naivety right here which fits proper as much as the silliness (and illegality) of its sentimental climactic scene on a lake.
Barry Ward (from Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Corridor) does his hyperactive utmost with the position of Leon, a recovering smack addict in Dublin and would-be musician who’s dedicated to his 12-step mentor Iver, a tough-talking previous man who saved him from medication; it is a fierce efficiency from veteran participant Liam Carney. However Iver is critically unwell and Leon is astonished one morning when calling spherical to his flat to search out him with a plastic hood over his head and a nurse, Maria (Maureen Beattie), along with her fingers on the gasoline nozzle, apparently doing a dummy run for euthanasia or perhaps the precise factor itself.
Indignant and impassioned, Leon rips off the hood and insists on wheeling Iver into the daylight for a final journey to the pub, a final journey to see his mates, and perhaps figures the outing will change his thoughts about the entire “exit” enterprise. I’ve to say that their “Valhalla” ending is unconvincing in a real-world context of what you truly can and might’t do to result in assisted loss of life with out discovering your self in court docket, and it leaves the entire movie on a kids-TV degree of plausibility. However Ward, Carney and Beattie give honest performances.
