Tiku Weds Sheru review: Dude, Where’s My Movie? – FILM COMPANION

Director: Sai Kabir
Writers: Sai Kabir, Amit Tiwari
Forged: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Avneet Kaur, Mukesh S Bhatt, Vipin Sharma
There are some unusual photographs floating round in my head. Like Nawazuddin Siddiqui talking to a cat named Elizabeth. Or jiving to a Spanish track in a nightclub, whereas tight close-ups of his face attempt to salvage his strikes. Or breaking down on a seaside when his younger spouse threatens to abort a child that’s not his, after which aggressively kissing her. Or breaking down in all places – when he will get arrested, when he slaps his colleague, when he declares his love, when he breathes. Or newcomer Avneet Kaur declaring that she will be able to’t tolerate poverty. Or – and that is essentially the most vivid picture – Kaur dancing for shady males on a stage, the place Siddiqui’s thought of rescuing her is to show up in drag and dance together with her earlier than whisking her away throughout a…shootout? I watched Tiku Weds Sheru and went to mattress for the evening, so now I’m unsure if I really watched it or simply had one of many worst fever desires. And if it wasn’t a dream, how do I unsee these scenes? How do I’m going again in time and warn my 12-hour-younger self to be mentally ready for one of many weirdest movies of the yr? The place’s a multiverse whenever you want one?
Over time, I’ve realized that phrases like “quirky” and “eccentric” within the synopsis are sometimes crimson flags. They’re a license for characters and storylines to go rogue, observe no guidelines, behave like nincompoops and switch ‘dropping the plot’ into an aesthetic. Sai Kabir’s Tiku Weds Sheru – which can be actor Kangana Ranaut’s maiden manufacturing – performs out like essentially the most disorienting hybrid of Tanu Weds Manu (spirited small-town woman; organized marriage), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (old-kind husband; potential soulmate) and Satya (Mumbai story; hustler able to straighten up for love). Siddiqui is Shiraz ‘Sheru’ Khan, a junior artist and struggling actor who doubles up as a fixer for sleazy politicians. I might swear there’s an early scene through which a politician suggestively caresses his thigh. However I can’t vouch for any of those visuals immediately. At this level, I’m higher off believing that my thoughts is enjoying methods on me. Kaur (whose spark is undone by the screenplay) is Tasneem ‘Tiku’ Khan, a lady from Bhopal who agrees to marry Sheru in order that she will be able to attain Mumbai and elope together with her lover. (Of their first assembly, she will get overwhelmed up by her brothers; of their second, she chews gum like a boss). When she informs stated lover that she may be pregnant together with his youngster, the scene at a railway station is performed for quirky and eccentric laughs. For some purpose, it finally ends up together with her chasing him. And we find yourself with the form of second-hand embarrassment that stems from watching a foul stand-up routine.
Ultimately, Tiku grows emotions for her husband Sheru due to two causes. One, he accepts her youngster and rebellious previous with open arms. And two, he pretends to be wealthy (the modest flat they’re staying in is outwardly a make-shift area until some large enterprise offers come by). In her eyes, he’s a movie financier in cahoots with the underworld; it’s effective, as a result of no less than there’s (the phantasm of) cash. Within the meantime, he decides to sober up. He abandons his part-time pimping gig as a result of he has a household. His accomplice (Mukesh S Bhatt) will get very offended. However when Tiku tells him that she will be able to’t stand poverty (no, not a dream), I feel he doubles down and turns into a drug smuggler. I feel, okay? Don’t take my phrase for it.
